Teach Your Children to Brush for Health and Happiness

The staff at Benitez Dental Clinic teaches you and your child dental hygiene habits to create a natural routine. Encourage a lifetime of strong oral health with some very simple actions:

  • Make brushing part of your daily schedule
  • Brush your teeth with your child
  • Use toothpaste your child likes, preferably with fluoride once child learns to spit
  • Infants and toddlers should use non-fluoride toothpaste
  • Use a soft toothbrush and brush gently
  • Start children with daily flossing early
  • Help them floss or provide them with Kids floss
Regular Check Ups

Prevention and early diagnosis is key for optimal oral health. The Canadian Dental Association recommends you bring your child for their first dental visit by the age of one year or as early as six months after the eruption of their first tooth.

By starting your child’s visits to the dentist at this age, you can prevent and detect caries early, since cavities in children can progress very quickly and it is common to find multiple caries in very young children, such as in the case of nursing bottle syndrome. In addition, the dentists at Benitez dental can screen for common habits that affect development, such as mouth breathing, thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and sleep apnea (which can even cause Attention Deficit Disorder).

During this first visit we also offer diet counseling. We will discuss the importance of diet and how it affects your child’s teeth. One of our qualified team members will go over which foods are safe, and which ones to avoid, such as cariogenic foods and frequent consumption of sugar drinks, juices and soft drinks.
